Scratch with Fourth Grade

Fourth Grade has been happily using Scratch a program, from MIT, about programming. The first week they looked at it was just a sandbox week. This is a time in which students can just go into a program and poke around, click on whatever they want to click on and as one student, Gabe said, “Sophisticatedly find things we didn’t know were in there.”

Week two involves a mini lesson about Sprites. Students learn what a Sprite is and how to teach a Sprite how to move and change. They also learn about backgrounds, sounds and scripts.

Students eventually will be able to program their own game or movie.

Scratch is a free download from the site. Talk to mom and dad about it if you are interested in having it on your computer at home. It is up the them to decide.
